Sleep Apnoea is the technical term for when a person stops breathing whilst they are sleeping and wake up holding their breath, gasping or even choking.
Breathing might stop anywhere from a few seconds to longer than a minute and these gaps can occur several hundred times a night, impairing your ability to reach the deep, restful phases of sleep your body and mind need to perform at their best.
Even though there is a link between snoring and sleep apnoea, they can occur independently. In other words, not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea and not everyone with sleep apnoea snores.
The British Sleep Society (BSS) have produced a free Ostructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) Toolkit which contains information about the disorder and treatment for it.

People with sleep apnoea are up to five time more likely than ‘normal’ sleeper to be involved in traffic accidents.
Sleep Apnoea can be classified as Mild, Moderate or Severe.
The oral appliances we provide are a first line choice for those suffering from Mild to Moderate apnoea and a second line choice for those with more severe cases or those who cannot tolerate CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy.
The interruptions in breathing associated with sleep apnoea can actually lower your life expectancy- even more so than diabetes and smoking.
Even though a high percentage of people who snore have a genetic predisposition to it there are things you can do to reduce the harmful side effects- particularly if you also suffer from sleep apnoea.
25% of smoker experience sleep disruptions compared to only 5% of non smokers. You’ll sleep better, feel better and save money!
Try sleeping on your side. It’s simple and can be very effective.
Fatty tissue around your neck can prevent the free movement of air so if you’re not already at a healthy weight, losing a few pounds could work wonders.
Cut back on your alcohol intake. Drinking alcohol, especially before bedtime, relaxes the muscles at the back of your neck and causes snoring.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If you have allergies or sinusitis there are sprays and other treatments that can clear your nose and help you breathe better at night.
This may be a little non-traditional but belting out your favourite tune can strengthen the muscles in your throat. Because muscles have a tendency to slacken as we get older, this can be an especially helpful technique for people over 50.
I’ve had sleeping problems this last 4 years. I had been constantly complaining to my doctors.
But then a friend of mine, after going away with me said, 'I know why your constantly tired you have sleep Apnea!’.
I had no idea what this meant or how serious it can be. It took approximately a year to get this diagnosis confirmed,
my nhs consultant actually recommended Paul to me.
I contacted Paul stright away and he seen me out of hours within 24 hours.
He recommended me an appliance to suit me, took impressions of my mouth and made me a temporary appliance all in that first appointment.
Fantastic service and now I’ve been using my Narvel CC appliance at night since February my life has been transformed. I’m no longer permanently tired. I actually feel refreshed after I waken up. I’ve so much more energy.
The difference is remarkable , the appliance is easy to use and comfortable.
I’m totally grateful to Paul, his approach is so kind and considerate. Dr Paul Reaney absolutely goes the extra mile for his patients. 5 stars isn’t enough!!
